Carlo Bergonzi is to this day known as a true artist with an enormous talent and
critics define him has one of the best tenors in the world, above all Verdian. Encouraged by
the success of his debut in 1951 at the Petruzzelli Theatre in Bari in 1951, he decided to
prepare for many other operas. He has a vast repertoire that consists of over 70 operas,
ranging from traditional Romanticism to Verdi, as well as his numerous recitals programs.
Heachieved international stardom when he debuted with the Metropolitan Opera in New Yorkin
Verdi’s Aidain the 1956-1957 season. He was to sing for 33 years in the grand opera house,
but also in La Scala in Milan, and opera houses in Buenos Aires, Chicago, San Francisco,
Vienna Staatsoper, Covent Garden in London, Liceu of Barcelona, Madrid, Berlin, Tokyo, Rome,
Napoli, Torino, Geneva, Bologna, Reggio in Parma, and La Fenice in Venice. The recordings of
Bergonzi are numerous: 25 complete operas and various recitals and duets. He has worked with
famous conductors such as James Levine, Bruno Walter,Tullio Serafin, Herbert von Karajan,
Carlo Maria Giulini, Georg Solti, Dimitri Mitropoulos, Georges Prêtre,
Francesco Molinari-Pradelli and Leonard Bernstein. His colleagues included Maria Callas,
Renata Tebaldi, Leontyne Price, JoanSutherland, Shirley Verrett, Montserrat Caballé, Birgitt
Nilsson, Grace Bumbry and many more
