May 20, 2005 - Gala concert

The complete list of laureates and five special award winners for the fourth edition of the Montreal International Musical Competition was announced prior to the gala concert which was closing the Voice – 2005 Competition at Théâtre Maisonneuve, at Place des Arts. Before the concert headlined by the six laureates, mister André Bourbeau, President of the Competition, announced the winners of the Jean A. Chalmers Award, Joseph Rouleau Award and the People’s choice Award - Tribute to Richard Verreau.

Mister André Bourbeau with Sin Nyung Hwang, laureate of the First Grand Prize, and Monique Jérôme-Forget, Chair of the Conseil du trésor and minister responsible for Government Administration.

The Honourable Liza Frulla, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Minister responsible for Status of Women, with Peter McGillivray, laureate of the Second Grand Prize and mister André Bourbeau.

Mister Jean-Pierre Gilardeau, President of Alcoa, with the Third Grand Prize winner, Elena Xanthoudakis and André Bourbeau.

Alice Keung, Senior Vice-President, Technology Information at National Bank with Phillip Addis, one of the two candidates tied for fourth place and mister André Bourbeau.

May 18, 2005 - The laureates are revealed

The jury of the fourth Montreal International Musical Competition handed down its final decision tonight, awarding the First Grand Prize, with its $25,000 in prize winnings, to lyrical artist Sin Nyung Hwang from South Korea. To view the list list of laureates,

May 16, 2005 - The final round has begun

It is on Théâtre Maisonneuve's stage of Place des Arts that the final round of the Montreal International Musical Competition began. Maestro Daniel Lipton was conducting the Competition's Orchestra for this first night of the final round.

May 15, 2005 - Let the masters speak

It was this Sunday that the master classes took place. This event was a unique occasion for music lovers to see three internationaly renowned artists share their knowledge with 15 young singers from Quebec. This year, jury members Shirley Verrett, Carlo Bergonzi and Dame Gwyneth Jones were at the head of these classes.

May 13, 2005 - The finalists are announced

It was before a full house at the Salle Pierre-Mercure tonight that Montreal International Musical Competition President André Bourbeau announced the twelve lyrical artists who will move on to the last and final round of the Competition, which will take place May 16, 17 and 18 at 7:30 p.m. at Place des Arts’ Théâtre Maisonneuve in Montreal. These twelve finalists will have the opportunity to play with the Competition orchestra, conducted by Daniel Lipton.

The twelve finalists were announced following the last day of the semi-final round on Friday. Click on the picture on the left to view the candidates who will be performing during the final round of the Competition.

May 9, 2005 - Public opening

It was on May 9th that the candidates and members of the jury were presented to the Montreal public. Following this event which took place at the Grande Place of Complexe Desjardins,  the singers and jury members were invited to the Montreal city hall where mayor Gérald Tremblay welcomed them.

It was at the Grande place of Complexe Desjardins that the public opening and the random draw for the semi-final time slots took place.

Following the public opening, Montreal mayor, mister Gérald Tremblay, welcomed the candidates and members of the jury to Montreal city hall. Here is a picture of the members of the jury with mayor Tremblay.


May 7, 2005 - Welcome to all

On Saturady, May 7th, the candidates were invited to a reception at Maison of Jeunesses Musicales. For the occasion, the president of the Montreal International Musical Competition, mister André Bourbeau, was present to welcome the participants. Everyone present had a good time and seemed to be in good spirits two days prior to the beginning of the Competition.

Mister André Bourbeau, president of the Montreal International Musical Competition, welcomed the candidates to Montreal and wished them the beast of luck for the Competition.

The candidates had the chance to meet each other and learn more about their fellow competitors.

People who attended the reception enjoyed fine food and company!
