On May 20th, the 2005 edition of Montreal International Musical Competition came to an end after two weeks of intense activities. The team of the Competition would like to thank all who have contributed, near or far, to the undeniable international success of this fourth edition.

May 21, 2005 - ALL THE WINNERS OF VOICE 2005 COMPETITION ARE REVEALED

The complete list of laureates and five special award winners for the fourth edition of the Montreal International Musical Competition was announced prior to the gala concert which was closing the Voice – 2005 Competition at Théâtre Maisonneuve, at Place des Arts. Before the concert headlined by the six laureates, mister André Bourbeau, President of the Competition, announced the winners of the Jean A. Chalmers Award, Joseph Rouleau Award and the People’s choice Award - Tribute to Richard Verreau. The jury for this fourth edition, included world-renowned artists Carlo Bergonzi, Mario Bernardi, C.C., Eduardo del Campo, Dame Gwyneth Jones, Tom Krause, Joseph Rouleau, O.C., G.O.Q. and Shirley Verrett.

Here are the names of the winners and the amount of their prize winnings:

Sin Nyung Hwang, winner of the Voice - 2005 Montreal International Musical Competion


FIRST GRAND PRIZE a bursary of $25,000 granted by the Quebec Government:
Sin Nyung Hwang – Soprano (South Korea)

SECOND GRAND PRIZE a bursary of $15,000 granted by Canadian Heritage:
Peter McGillivray – Baritone (Canada)

THIRD GRAND PRIZE a bursary of $7,500 granted by Alcoa:
Elena Xanthoudakis – Soprano (Australia)

FOURTH PRIZE ex-aequo – Two bursaries of $4,500 granted by the National Bank of Canada and Gaz Metro
Phillip Addis – Baritone (Canada)
Anna Kasyan – Soprano (Georgia)

SIXTH PRIZE a bursary of $3,000 – granted by CGI:
Chantal Dionne – Soprano (Canada)

Special awards

JEAN A. CHALMERS AWARD a bursary of $ 10,000 granted by The Canadian Opera Volunteer Committee to the best Canadian candidate:
Peter McGillivray – Baritone (Canada)

JOSEPH ROULEAU AWARD a bursary of $ 7,500 – granted by Interinvest to the best candidate from Quebec:
Phillip Addis – Baritone (Canada)

CBC GALAXIE RISING STARS AWARD a bursary of $ 5,000 – for the best opera performance by a Canadian:
Phillip Addis – Baritone (Canada)

BEST INTERPRETATION OF THE IMPOSED CANADIAN WORK AWARD
a bursary of $ 5,000 granted by the City of Montreal:
Elena Xanthoudakis – Soprano (Australia)

PEOPLE’S CHOICE AWARD “TRIBUTE TO RICHARD VERREAU”
a bursary of $ 2,500 granted by Hydro-Quebec:
Lauren Skuce – Soprano (United States)

Numerous national and international institutions, opera houses and orchestras will also grant engagements to some of the candidates, who have impressed them throughout the Competition. These engagements will undoubtedly help these young singers develop their skills.

The next edition of the Montreal International Musical Competition will be dedicated to violin and take place from May 23 to June 2, 2006.
